What Heat Exposure Actually Does to Your Sperm

A friend mentions he has been working with his laptop resting on his lap every evening for months, and someone tells him this could be quietly hurting his sperm count. Another friend loves the sauna after his workouts and wonders if he needs to give it up while he and his partner are trying to conceive. The advice online ranges from calm dismissal to genuine alarm, and almost none of it points to an actual study. We went and read the actual studies, and the honest answer is more interesting than either extreme: heat does measurably change your sperm, the effect is well documented and reversible, but the everyday behaviors people worry about most are not necessarily the ones the real-world evidence says matter most for actually getting pregnant.

Why Your Testicles Run Cooler Than the Rest of You

Your testicles sit outside your body in the scrotum for a reason. Making healthy sperm, a process called spermatogenesis, runs best at a temperature about 2 to 4 degrees Celsius below your core body temperature, roughly the difference between a warm room and a cool one. The body maintains that gap with a clever plumbing trick called counter current heat exchange: the artery carrying warm blood into the testicle runs right alongside the vein carrying cooler blood out, and heat transfers from one to the other before it ever reaches the tissue that makes sperm. It is a quiet, constant cooling system that most men never think about.

When that system gets overwhelmed, either because the surrounding environment is hot or because something inside the scrotum is trapping heat, the sperm-producing tissue is the first thing to suffer. This is also part of why a varicocele, a cluster of enlarged veins in the scrotum, is linked to fertility problems: the pooled blood raises local temperature and disrupts that same cooling mechanism.

What the Research Actually Shows

The clearest experimental evidence comes from laptops. Researchers had 29 healthy men use a laptop balanced on their lap for two 60-minute sessions and measured scrotal temperature directly. With the laptop running, temperature on the right side rose by a median of 2.8 degrees Celsius and the left side by 2.6 degrees Celsius, both within about 15 minutes (Sheynkin et al., Human Reproduction, 2005). Notably, even sitting in the same closed-legged position without a laptop running raised scrotal temperature by over 2 degrees, meaning a meaningful part of the effect comes from how you have to sit to balance a laptop, not only from the heat of the device itself.

Sauna use has been studied more rigorously, and it also shows why the reversibility question matters. Ten men with normal sperm counts used a traditional Finnish sauna at 80 to 90 degrees Celsius for 15 minutes, twice a week, for three months. By the end of that period, sperm count and motility (the percentage of sperm that swim normally) had both dropped significantly, along with measurable damage to how tightly sperm packages its DNA and to the mitochondria that power each sperm's movement (Garolla et al., Human Reproduction, 2013). The reassuring part: every one of those changes fully reversed within six months of stopping sauna use. Heat-related sperm damage of this kind is not permanent. It follows the roughly 72 day cycle it takes your body to produce a new batch of sperm from scratch, which is why any change you make needs at least 12 weeks before you will see it reflected in a semen analysis.

Hot tubs and hot baths show a similar pattern. In a small study of eleven infertile men who used to soak in hot water regularly and then stopped, five men showed a strong response: their total motile sperm count, meaning the number of normally swimming sperm in the full sample, rose by an average of 491 percent, and motility itself improved from 12 percent to 34 percent (Shefi et al., International Braz J Urol, 2007). Not every man in that small study responded, which is a useful reminder that individual biology varies and heat is rarely the only factor at play.

Underwear turns out to matter too, and this is the study most men have actually heard about. Harvard researchers looked at 656 men being seen at a fertility clinic and compared those who mostly wore boxers to those who mostly wore briefs or similar tight-fitting styles. Boxer wearers had a 25 percent higher sperm concentration, a 17 percent higher total sperm count, and 14 percent lower FSH, a pituitary hormone that rises when the testes are working harder than they should have to (Mínguez-Alarcón et al., Human Reproduction, 2018). Zooming out, a meta-analysis pooling nine studies and 356 men found that heat exposure, across a range of settings, was associated with meaningfully lower semen volume, concentration, total sperm count, motility, and normal shape or morphology (Hoang-Thi et al., Iranian Journal of Public Health, 2022). Men working long hours in genuinely hot occupational environments, such as bakeries, foundries, and kitchens, show some of the largest effects in this literature, since the exposure is sustained for years rather than an occasional evening.

What We're More Skeptical About

Here is where we think most heat coverage overstates its case. Nearly everything above comes from measuring semen parameters directly, under controlled or fairly extreme conditions: a lab-measured sauna protocol, a small clinical cohort soaking in hot tubs regularly, a laptop pinned to the lap for a full hour. That is real, useful evidence about what heat does to sperm production mechanically. It is a different and harder question whether the occasional hot tub, the laptop on your lap for twenty minutes, or one pair of briefs is actually moving the needle on whether you conceive.

The best evidence we have on that harder question is a preconception cohort study that followed over 3,000 couples trying to conceive and tracked men's real-world heat habits, including hot tub and bath use, sauna use, laptop use, seat heaters, tight underwear, and long sitting, against how quickly pregnancy actually happened (McKinnon et al., Andrology, 2022). Individually, none of these common behaviors showed a meaningful association with how long it took couples to conceive. Only when a man reported four or more of these heat exposures stacked together, and particularly if he was 30 or older, did the data start to suggest a real effect, and even then the range of uncertainty around that number was wide enough that we would not call it settled.

Our honest read: the lab studies are right that heat measurably changes semen parameters, and the mechanism is not in question. But if you occasionally use a hot tub, sit with a laptop on your lap sometimes, or wear briefs, the real-world evidence does not show that any single one of those habits is a major driver of whether you conceive. What the data does support is that stacking several heat sources together, day after day, for months, is the pattern most likely to matter, especially past age 30.

What This Means in Practice

If you are actively trying to improve your numbers, the highest-value changes are the ones with a clean mechanism and low cost to fix. Set your laptop on a desk or a table instead of your lap, especially if you use it for long stretches most days. If you use saunas or hot tubs, there is no need to give them up entirely based on the evidence, but if you are in a heavy user category, several sessions a week for months at a time, cutting back while you are actively trying to conceive is a reasonable and low-cost move given how clearly that specific pattern shows up in the sauna and hot tub studies above. Loose-fitting underwear is a free change with real supporting data behind it. If your job puts you in sustained high heat, a kitchen, a foundry, a warehouse without climate control, that is the exposure with the strongest and most consistent evidence behind it, and it is worth mentioning to a clinician if you and your partner are also dealing with unexplained fertility issues.

Whatever you change, give it time before judging the result. A full cycle of sperm production takes about 72 days, so give any change at least 12 weeks before retesting, and test again afterward rather than guessing. That is the only way to know whether a change actually moved your numbers, rather than assuming it did.

Heat is one of the more mechanistically clear-cut factors in male fertility. The pathway from elevated scrotal temperature to reduced sperm count and motility is well established, well replicated, and reversible on a predictable timeline. Where the field gets overhyped is in translating that lab-level clarity into panic about any single everyday habit. The honest picture is that cumulative, sustained heat exposure, particularly the occupational kind, carries the most real-world weight, while the occasional hot tub or laptop session is unlikely to be the reason a couple is struggling to conceive on its own.
